Positive thoughts today!

Good morning Hodgepodge readers!  Here are this week's questions with my answers.  They are going to be "wordy" because I have nowhere to go this morning.  Here in the SC Lowcountry everything is closed today due to the forecast of sleet, ice, then snow.  Lovely!?!  I'm not venturing outdoors so I have plenty of time to ponder the questions and type my responses.

1.  It's been said that one positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. Do you think that's true? Do you find that an easy exercise most mornings?  What's something positive you told yourself today?

I absolutely believe it's true.  I am fortunate that when I wake up I'm ready to go for the day and I generally have a positive outlook on life.  But I believe even one specific positive thought can get you thinking about the good in life and therefore you can take on tasks and communicate with others with that same positive belief.

This morning?  As I said already it's going to be an "indoors" day so I told myself this morning to stay put, read, exercise, play my flute, get things done in the house… make use of the time inside.   I know this rare event of sleet and snow here won't last long and I will be out and about in a day or two.  I am blessed to be in a warm home with my puppy dogs.  My hubby is trying to get home from Boston today and I don't know if he will make it.  I'm sure flights will be grounded.  He handles changes in schedules and delays well, but I feel for him.  Who thought getting south would be an issue?   Such strange weather!

2.  There will be karaoke at the next party you attend… are you in?  Or will you be faking a sore throat?

Ha!  This question makes me think of the great scene in "My Best Friend's Wedding" where Kimmie (played by Cameron Diaz) sings at the table and she's way off key, at first embarrassed - but then belts it out by the end.  A very funny moment!  Everyone joins in with her.    That could be me, although I think I do have a bit more singing ability than Kimmie.   I think I sing on key for the most part. I hope so anyway.

I would certainly have to down a glass or two of wine before getting up to sing karaoke, but I suppose if everyone is taking their turn then I would too.    One of my wishes has always been that I could have a better voice and really sing. I am jealous of those who can!   I like to think when I get to heaven I'll have the voice of a songbird!  ( :

3.  January 29th is National Puzzle Day… what's something you've found puzzling recently?

I recently devoted a blog post to it:  the division of beliefs in this country about gun ownership.  It's the "freedom of the right to bear arms" vs.  people like me who think it's better to give up that right than to continue to have deadly shootings every day.

4.  Jigsaw, crossword, acrostic, logic, sudoku, word search…  what's your favorite kind of puzzle, and when did you last work one?

I am a crossword puzzle junkie!  I do them everyday!  I sometimes think I get the daily newspaper just so I can get the crosswords - yes, two of them each day!  Thank you to Myrtle Beach's The Sun News for putting in two in each paper! Hubby and I get the NY Times on the weekends and I grab the Sunday Magazine out of it VERY quickly to get the crossword out of it!  I can sit on the couch and work it for hours!!  I also keep a few crossword books around to fill in the gaps.

5.  Recently a write by the name of Amy Glass ruffled feathers with a post she wrote saying she looked down on women with husbands and kids and she was not sorry.  Among other things, she says women will be equal with men when we stop saying house work and real work are equally important.  What say you?  Do you think men and women are equal in the 21st century?  Why or why not?

First, let me say, Ms. Glass's mother must be so proud - NOT! ha   But, viva la difference of opinion and she had every right to say how she felt in her personal post.  I do not agree with her about women who "choose" to get married and raise a family.  In fact, I think most satisfaction in life, even joy in life, is being in a loving family unit. It is for me.  Raising children is more important than just about anything I can think of… so I disagree with Ms. Glass. It's not equal. Family is GREATER than job importance.

And I also think women are not equal to men - we are better!! ( :    Seriously, we are made different and  both sexes have traits that help make the world go round….  viva la difference!

6.  What's a product you've noticed in the grocery store that you'd like to try, but haven't yet?

Okay… I have written this before but I do not enjoy my time in a grocery store so I usually go in, get what I need, and then get out as quickly as possible.  I grab the things on my list (if I remember to bring it) and don't peruse the aisles for new and different food choices.

Maybe I'll see something interesting in the answers by the other Hodgepodge responders and I'll pick it up!

7.  The author, Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) was born this week in 1832 (January 27th.)  Which character from his celebrated novel 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' would you most like to meet and why?

Hmmm.  I looked at the list of characters and all are fascinating but certainly have their faults. I think I have to say I would most enjoy meeting Alice because she is so curious about everything, even tho it gets her into trouble at times.  But without her curiosity she would never experience wonderland and all it's unusual animals.

8. My random thought.

Well, it's only days until the Super Bowl so I think my random thought has to be about it!   What are you looking forward to, and who do you want to see win?   I am rooting for Seattle because the Seahawks have not won in ages!  Seattle also has an ex-Gamecock Sidney Rice, who got a lot of play in before an injury put him on the sidelines during the season.  I like to root for the Carolina boys!

What do you think will be the most interesting commercial?  I am still a bit disgusted about ex-govenor Arnold doing the beer commercials.   A couple of them ran during the League Championship games two Sundays ago and they will "continue" during the Super Bowl.    I haven't heard much about other commercials scheduled.  But, they are usually on the crazy side…off the wall.  Some even stupid.

Have fun watching! Mostly, I hope the score will stay close so it's exciting to watch! I like Peyton Manning. Both teams deserve to be there.

The year of the polar vortex.

In anticipation of a pretty rare phenomenon of snow here tomorrow, I thought I'd say NOW that I know there are people out there getting enjoyment out of it - and of knowing that I am going to be finding myself dealing with snow.    You know who you are!   ha!!  ( :

It's going to be mid-60's this afternoon and then the polar vortex is plummeting down again and it will bring us cold temps and precipitation. The two together equals snow, and maybe sleet and icy conditions.   It's gonna be messy.  And, here in the lowcountry, we have a bad combination of no road salt, and no plows - and people who don't know how to drive in it.  Of course, if it's icy nobody should even try driving anyway.

So, as I anticipate this I am listening to the noise of new shingles being delivered on my roof.  I'm guessing they are going to have to sit there for a few days.  Thankfully the old shingles have not been pulled off yet.

I'm also wondering if my activities tomorrow, and tomorrow night will be cancelled.  I've waited all month for Book Club and we are to gather tomorrow at 7:00pm.  But, will we?    See.  This is what I don't like about snow.  Things changed.  Events get cancelled.

It's been so cold on some days lately I've had to postpone our church work day at the Habitat for Humanity build site twice already.

I know I have said this before, but I'm not a happy girl "cocooned" inside my house for very long.  I get "hysterics in the barracks".  I need to get out in to the fresh air, and I love to "piddle" in my yard (see earlier post - awhile back.)

So, to all you out there giggling that Marla is going to have to deal with cold and snow…go ahead.  Snicker.  It's only fair.  I know you all have to go through it more often than I do.   You can be happy I feel your pain.  Misery loves company!

Come on Spring!!!!!

Friday, January 24, 2014

Oh, here I go… I'm trying to understand.

I am about to write about a subject that I feel strongly about and want to "get my say" out without personally offending individuals.  Some would say, well then stay quiet Marla - don't bring up something that is a "hot button" subject.  Stay away from politics and religion.  Most times I do.

Today a couple of things have happened to me that has me thinking…and trying to understand.  First, this morning I saw in the local newspaper that the SC House voted to approve a law to allow concealed guns in public restaurants and bars.  Once the governor puts her stamp on it, it will be law.  The SC governor, Gov. Haley, is a gun owner (in fact she got one as a gift for Christmas and tweeted about it) so I see her signing it without delay.

Thankfully there are stipulations.  If someone decides to bring a concealed weapon into an establishment they are not allowed to drink alcohol.   If someone is caught drinking in possession of a  gun they can be penalized up to $2000 and can face up to 2 years in prison.  Also, restaurants and bars have the right to post that they do NOT allow concealed weapons.

This morning I posted on Facebook that I was concerned about this new law and that I see our "love of guns" turning our world into a new wild, wild west.  The whole idea of letting people carry guns into a drinking establish is really, really scary to me.  People act stupid when they drink and say really dumb stuff - and sometimes they even "look" for a fight.  Now, even if the gun-carrier is not drinking, hot heads can get out of hand and the idea of having a "killing machine" right there is downright frightening to me!   It's not a good combination.

I know I will prefer to eat out at a restaurant, or have a drink or two at a bar, that does not allow concealed weapons.  I will look for those signs before walking in.  But, what's to stop someone from carrying a concealed weapon anyway?   Will these places have to frisk people or buy X-ray machines?

We have seen an increase in school shootings this year, and we have seen people get mad and shoot & kill in public movie theaters a few times.  One shooter was a retired police officer!   It's just so crazy to me!

So, the second thing that happened this morning is as I was scrolling along on Facebook I came upon something from the Mothers organization that has joined together to push for stricter gun laws.  Too many children have been accidentally shot by negligent family members or others who leave loaded weapons sitting around.  This group is working together to get the word out.  I "liked" the organization on Facebook so from time to time I get informational  posts from them.  This morning's post was about the Lamar Company billboard in Chicago…the one that shows pictures of an apple pie, a baseball glove, and a rifle. The idea was all 3 things are items are "American."   The Mothers group asked that we post on the Lamar site if we disapprove of the billboard.  So, I did.  I wrote that I personally found it offensive and I felt it was harsh for victims of gun violence.  Well… within an hour I had 4 or 5 reply posts from those who support the billboard, and of course our "Bill of Rights" was acknowledged…and the freedom to defend ourselves.

I could not help but think that these "replies" on the Lamar site on FB were from people just ready to say something back. Waiting.  Yes, yes, I know it's their right to do that.  But, I did feel it was calculated.

Here's my real reason for writing this blog.  Am I REALLY in a small minority that sees the dangers of guns everywhere?  Am I the crazy one?  I am questioning myself…what am I missing?

Here's my stance - it comes after much thought and a lot of years living in this world!   Guns kill people when they are aimed at them…even from afar.  When someone shoots at an individual it is not usually just to harm them.  It becomes a "killing machine."  Guns are easy to hide.  EVERY individual person in this world gets mad at times.  We all just do!  We feel cheated, or overlooked, or have our space invaded.   It rubs us the wrong way.   We are not feeling or thinking rationally during those moments.

I'm not even talking about those who are diagnosed (or should be diagnosed) with clinical mental and emotionally issues.  I mean YOU and ME.  We all get mad at humanity at times.

An available gun in that situation, at that moment, is a killing machine.  It's something irreversible.  It changes lives forever.

Yes, the founders of the US gave us a right to bear arms.  The country was "wild" with animals. Communication was not available.  Police forces had not been established.   People had to fend for themselves at that time.   But - it's different now!!!!

The United States of America is one of the only countries that still holds on to this "right"… and we are  the ones with the most horrible killings due to guns.  The numbers are staggering.  Both accidental, and planned…and in rages - against family members and others.   I find it embarrassing that we allow it to continue.

I am NOT talking about hunting, and about those who own guns for "sport" (and yes, I do not understand that either… killing innocent animals. Why?)

I really worry about our country's mentality.  I worry about the way people think about "defending" themselves at the sake of others, often other innocent people.   "Collatoral damage"  are lives with rights too.

One of my new year's resolutions was to TRY and accept other people's points of view.  So, I really struggle with this.  I WANT to see it.  I just can't.  I understand we all have free will and live in a country with freedom in business (2 new gun companies are setting up shop in SC) and really…. I try.

Am I the only one out there with this concern??

Another set of hodgepodge questions to ponder.

We are waiting for an arctic blast to come down here in Carolina, but I know my northern friends are about to get it even worse.  Hopefully, the Hodgepodge questions and my answers can warm your heart for a minute, and help you forget about Mother Nature creating havoc outdoors.

1.  It was decided on Sunday that the Denver Broncos will meet the Seattle Seahawks in this year's Super Bowl.  So, when was the last time you bowled?  Not where you thought this question was going, is it?  Do you like to bowl? Are you any good?

Well, it's been over 7 years since I moved from Sparta, NJ - and so it's been that long since I have bowled.  When I lived there I was very involved in the Sparta Friends & Neighbors Club, and it had a weekly ladies bowling league.  I never played on a team, but I was a sub and filled in often, sometimes playing every week (every Thursday.)  The league was very social and fun.  So, I enjoyed the fellowship - and yes, I enjoyed bowling.  I think my all-time high was a little under 200.  Not bad - not good either.

2.  Should sports stars be role models?

I think if you asked any professional sports person if there was someone they looked up to as a kid, and admired,  they'd say yes.  It's hard not to be a public figure who has a talent and who gets a lot of attention and NOT be a role model.  It just comes with the territory.  Unfortunately, sports stars are human like everyone else, and just because they excel in their physical ability, it doesn't mean they are very smart in what they always do and say.

But, I do think that sports stars should be aware that along with fame and big bucks comes a responsibility to act a certain way…to remember what it's like to be that young kid.

In this age of immediate texting, with twitter, and with everyone taking pictures it is a challenging thing to be a role model. One wrong thing said, or wrong act, can be very damaging.   It's sad but true.

3.  January is National Oatmeal month… are you a fan?  How do you like your oats?

It's not that I do not like oatmeal, I just never think of eating it!  I don't know why.  I know it's healthy, and a warm start to the day.   I prefer coffee, and yes, my morning peanut butter sandwich.  I make one every single morning. I'm a creature of habit.

4.  What is one book on your reading list for 2014?

I plan to read "I am Malala" by Malala Yousafzai very soon.   I have many books on my list, and I am  happy I belong to a Book Club that helps to widen my reading horizons.

5.  What would you like your future self to say to your present self?

"Well done."

6.  When scrolling through the TV guide, what is one movie title that makes you stop, grab the popcorn, and watch for a while?

That just happened to me the other night.  Hubby and I were scrolling and came across "Moulin Rouge" and we HAD to stop and watch it.  I love the music, the wacky way it was made, and the love story.  Both Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman did an excellent job!  "I will love you until my dying day…. come what may!"

I also would stop and watch "Bull Durham" if I came upon it while scrolling.  Again, I love the actors, the characters they play, and the dialogue is so memorable!   "Oh my!"

In general I'm a sucker for musicals, so I would stop for "The Sound of Music", for "White Christmas" and "Peter Pan" (the original with Mary Martin…do they ever show it anymore?? )

7.  What are two style trends you hope never come back into fashion?

This is a toughie question for me.  Why?  Because I am not a big fashion person who follows trends.  I'm all about comfort.  I especially won't go with the trends for the most part if they seem painful to wear AND like something that will go in and out quickly.   I know clunky, heavy shoes are in again but I would not wear them.  I also don't like low cut jeans so when you sit down your butt shows.  Really, I would be perfectly happy wearing shorts and flip flops year round.   ( :

8.  My random thought.

Ok.  So, did you watch the commercials during last Sunday's championship football games?  If so, you probably saw ex-governor Arnold Shwartzenagger (sp.?) in a commercial for Bud Light wearing a stupid-looking wig and getting ready to play ping pong?   Has he gone off the deep end?  Will he do anything to be on TV again?  As I watched I just kept thinking how Maria Shriver must be happy she is not with him now because he's acting like a fool.   I think the commercial "will be continued" during the Super Bowl and I can't help but wonder how low will Arnold go??  I guess we will see.   Crazy!

A free MLK Jr. Day

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  A lot of people have the day off from work or school and like to think of it as a "free day".  it's a day on the calendar each year to be free from the normal Monday routines.   I think it's appropriate to call it a "free day" since Dr. King spoke so much about freedom for all people.

He also spoke about the need to love one another and to live together in peace. He urged Americans to treat all people equally and to reach out beyond their comfort zone,  and to do it with faith.

Dr. King had a calling to become a preacher and a civil rights leader.  He was raised in a family that stressed values found in the Bible.  Love, hope,  and forgiveness.  He never considered violence against another as a solution in any situation.  And, even when violence was used against him and his followers, he did not return with it.

Yesterday the pastor at our church focused on the word "call" in his sermon.  The Bible lessons we read were about the time when John the Baptist was called to prepare the way, and a few of the disciples were called to follow Him.

We are ALL called.  We are all given choices to make; choices on how to spend our time and our resources.  We are called to use our uniqueness to make a difference.  We are called to serve others and to better the world around us.

So, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a very appropriate day to spend a bit of time thinking how you are called - and WHY you are called.  And, today is a good time to think HOW you can use your calling in your life, in your community.

I'm called.  You are called.   Can you hear it??

Rainy days and Hodgepodge...

It's a rainy Tuesday morning here and that makes it the perfect time for me to sit at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee and this week's Hodgepodge questions.   Here they are with my answers.

1.  Are you a force to be reckoned with?  In what way?

No I am not.  At least I hope I do not come across as a "force" that will bully you, or push you, or that I behave as a person who needs to be contained.  I have never been attracted to that time of person either.  Too strong, too pushy. I think you can get more bees with honey… and that those who have manners and respect can go a long way.

2.  What are two things you love about the wintertime?  Or, if love feels like too strong a word, what are two things you 'like' about winter?

I am glad Joyce included the second question! Ha!  I am not a winter lover, so listing two 'likes' seems more manageable.   Hmmmm….  let me think….    two likes….   okay... I can come up with two.  Give me a minute.  I'm partly jesting but I do have trouble finding good in winter.  I know it's all part of God's creation and that seasons are a necessary cycle.   So, does that count?  Without winter, plants and flowers can not have rebirth in springtime and beauty in summer.   And, perhaps I can look at it from the Chinese "ying yang"  perspective.  Without a time of cold, and short days with long darkness, we would not appreciate the warm and long days of summertime.   No, I think I would enjoy summer  anyway.  Ha!   Like I have said before ,hubby and I do talk about moving to Key West.   Maybe one day.

3.  Pomegranate, kumquat, persimmon, kiwi, and guava are all fruits said to have health benefits, particularly during winter months. Do you have a favorite on this list?  Are there any on the list you haven't tried?

Oh geez.  I guess I'm still mostly a 'meat and potatoes' girl from Ohio because I struggle to eat fruit on a regular basis and have not tried all in the above list.  And, because I am not a fan of spending lots of time cooking and preparing food in my kitchen, I have not purchased these fruits to 'try out.'   Shame on me.

4.  I passed a local church yesterday and noticed they had this on their outdoor sign - 'When all else fails, do the right thing.'  Your thoughts?

When I first read this I thought to myself that the church mixed up two sayings.  But, thinking a bit deeper, I realized at our church on Sunday we celebrated the Baptism of Jesus, and the pastor spoke of what baptism does for us.   When baptized we become a child of God and are made a part of God's family, but we also get "right" with God…because our sins are washed away. Jesus took on our sins.  So, I do not know if that is what this particular church sign meant, but I like to think that it means when we people have tried and failed,  God is righteous and loving. Thank God!

5.  Do you ski?  According to one list I've seen, the top 5 ski destinations are - St. Anton Austria, Whistler Canada, Cortina Italy, Tahoe USA, and Zermatt Switzerland.  Of the five listed, which would you most like to visit?

I do NOT ski.  When I was in my 20's I did try it and took a few lessons.  When I first met and married my hubby he was really into skiing so I tried to learn, to spend time with him, to enjoy what he enjoyed.  But, it was not for me.  After a few ski trips together (and enough married time together) I begged out of ski trips and he ended up going with guy friends.

Of the places listed in this question, I am fortunate enough to say I have been to all the countries where the ski destinations are.  I have been in the Alps of Austria and Switzerland.  I lived in northern California and we headed over to Tahoe a few times.  This is not a surprise to anyone:  I much preferr Tahoe in the summertime!   It's got year-round beauty.     So, for me to pick a spot from the above list I will say Cortina Italy.  I could see myself spending more time in Italy:  the wine, the good food, the art history all appeal to me.

6.  What's the last thing you looked for online?  (Besides my blog.)

I just looked back on my Google history - and it was "Lee Judge cartoons".  Yesterday morning I saw and loved the cartoon on the editorial page of our newspaper and wanted to share it on Facebook.  So, I googled the artist Lee Judge, found a page of his cartoons - but not the one I was looking for.  Perhaps it will be posted in a week or two.  I'll have to check back.

7.  What saying, slogan, quote, or motto have you seen lately that inspires you for the next year?

Unfortunately this is a bit vague, but a week or so ago my nephew sent an email blast out of a lecture on trying new things in 30 day increments.  I can't remember the man's name who spoke (I suppose I should Google it!) but I loved how he said that year long resolutions are too intimidating, especially if it's about trying something new.  He said that he has learned to give himself 30 days - one month - to try a new project, or program, or whatever.  In 30 days if you love it you will stick with it - and if at the end of 30 days you don't then at least you have given it a valiant effort.

I did make two year-long resolutions (see the blog post before this one.)  I'm going to try REALLY hard to stick with them.  But, I also hope to try some 30 day challenges this year too.

8.  My random thought.

It's movie time! There are actually a few movies in the theaters right now worth seeing!  i went and saw "American Hustle" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" before the Golden Globes.   I thought AH was wonderfully acted and interesting…a bit confusing at times for me to keep everything clear because everyone was scamming everyone.  But, I'm glad it won some awards at the Golden Globes.

"The Wolf of Wall Street" was a long and very difficult movie to watch.  I'm very torn on how I feel about it because it was sickening, and showed much debauchery.  I went with my family to see it, and afterwards we went to dinner and ended up having a great discussion about the movie…about how people get caught up in a hedonistic lifestyle, and lose their morals and ethics.  We talked about raising children with the right values.  So often during the movie I thought "how could all those in the firm have no conscience and purposely take from their clients? "  But they were drugged up a lot and were living the "high life" in many ways.   So, see it.  Because it's a true story - and it's scary and sad - and there is a lesson to be learned.

Wow.  I was long-winded today!   Thank you if you stuck with me through all these questions and answers!  I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!   Happy blogging!

How are you doing with your New Year's resolutions?

So, how are you doing with your new year's resolutions?   I only made a couple of resolutions thinking if I made more  I would never be able to work on them all at one time…and two changes in my life right now is probably enough!

The first is an attitude change.  I vowed to keep my mind more open to others who see life differently than I do.  I want to stop myself from quickly judging a person because of their political beliefs, or because they don't see eye to eye with me on issues.  I don't want to "judge a book by its cover."   This is a work in progress… and it will continue to be.

The second resolution has to do with taking better care of myself physically.  I'm off to an okay start with it.  I'm trying to be somewhat careful in my food choices, and I'm trying to incorporate more exercise into my life.  Slowly.  I know if I go crazy with exercise I will hurt myself, then have to back off with it, and get out of the routine again.  I'm smart enough to know that moving the body is very  important for bone strength, for the heart, for weight control - and also for mind and emotional well-bring.

So…today I went to my first-ever yoga class.  A woman in my neighborhood is offering them in our resident's clubhouse each Monday, and at a very reasonable price.  Today was the first session of a 12 week program.  One of my neighbor/friends just LOVES yoga and I have seen the difference in her body.  She's become nicely contoured and has core strength.  She goes 2 or 3 times a week and says she misses it when she doesn't get there.   So, I thought, hmmm. yoga might be something that I should add into my life as I continue to age. (I haven't figured out a way to stop that yet!?)   I went to the class today…and I admit I did not like it.  I have never been flexible and I have rather long legs that make yoga "poses" challenging.  Hands flat on the floor??  While I'm bent over, straight back, balancing?? Well,  while it was only an hour class it seemed much longer than that to me.  ) :    I was ready for it to be done.

BUT - BUT - BUT…..I am not giving up on it.  Yes, I know tomorrow I will be sore. And maybe the day after.   I know the next time I go I will need to take sinus medicine an hour before class.  My head hurt by the end of today's class from being upside down so much, and I actually got a little nauseous from it too.    Sad, huh?

I'm not promising I will make it through the 12 weeks.   Actually, at this point I'm going to say I'll stick it out for the four more sessions.  Then I'll re-evaluate.   Wish me luck… I think I need it.

Oh, baby, it's cold outside!

Oh, baby it's cold outside!!!  It's the perfect time to stay indoors, to sit at my computer, and answer the Hodgepodge questions for the week.   Why don't you take a moment to read the questions and my answers, and feel free to answer them too?  I love reading your responses.  I mean, come on, where else do you have to go?  Stay warm.  Stay safe.

1.  Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English.  Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse, or just general uselessness.   Here are the words/phrases they'd like to see banished in 2014 -

selfie, twerk/twerking, hashtag, Twittersphere, Mr. Mom, T-bone, ___ on steroids, the suffixes -ageddon, and -pocalypse added to everything, from the world of politics - intellectually/morally bankrupt and Obamacare, and from the world of sports the words - adversity and fan base.

Which of these words/phrases would you like to see banished from everyday speech and why?  Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?

Well, I would love to see the end of" intellectually and morally bankrupt" used NOT because I don't like the sound of the words but because it defines our politicians well right now and I would love to see that change.  Wouldn't it be nice to instead say they did their jobs well due to the morals and ethics they have?

I'm totally unaware of "T-bone".  Can someone give me the use of it?  (Besides as a cut of steak.)

I am tired of the News Channels using -ageddon and -pocalyse and I think it's away of raising un-necessary fear in people.  In fact, how about they stop using the words "Breaking News" every five minutes??   Hello!  That is what a News Channel does...they break/give the recent news to the viewers.  duh

2.  What one unfinished project nags at you begging to be completed in this new year?

This is minor, and therefore it's not really nagging at me, but I have yet to complete putting away the Christmas decorations.  I'm almost done...just not quite.  I only put out part of my Christmas village this past season and it still needs to be packed away.  Plus, I need hubby's help to carry our two artificial trees (one is indoors, one is outdoors) to our shed in the back of our house.

3. When did you last have a bowl of soup?  What kind? Homemade or from a can?  What's your favorite soup?

I had some canned Campbell's tomato soup (made with milk) for lunch two days ago.  It used to be my favorite...especially with some crackers crunched up in it.   But, now, I think I like mushroom & rice, or a good vegetable soup.   Today will be an excellent day for a bowl!!

4.  Snowed in, snowed under, snow job... which one most applies to your life in recent days, figuratively speaking.

I think it's interesting that all 3 phrases using the word snow are negative! I am not a lover of snow, so it seems appropriate!  But, I can't say that I have felt snowed in, under, or have been given a snow job recently.  Thank goodness!!

5.  What's the funniest movie you have ever seen, or at least one of the funniest?

I think I have to go with "Christmas Vacation" with the Griswalds and their relatives!  I can watch it over and over... and relate at times, and laugh a lot!!!  There's no cussing, no sex to sell it...and it stands as one of the best ever made!   And funniest!!

6.  In general, would you say you're clumsy?

No.  ( :

7.  Elvis Presley was born on January 8th back in 1935. Are you an Elvis fan?  What's your favorite Elvis tune?

I would not call myself an Elvis fan, but I do acknowledge that many of his songs have certainly become a part of our lives, and that he was a bold singer for back in the 50's and early 60's.  He was "different" and appealed to the young of that generation.  Early on I liked his voice quality and his  songs have survived the test of time for that reason!   I liked "early Elvis" better than when he started wearing those white pantsuits and acting all Vegas-style.  As for my favorite Elvis songs?   "Can't Help Falling In Love with You" and "Are you Lonesome Tonight?".  I've got to say he does a wonderful rendition of "How Great Thou Art" too.  My hubby has always been a bigger Elvis fan than I have and he has Elvis songs on his Ipod...and sings them around the house.  (I'm giving away a secret! ha)

8.  My random thought.

I actually have a couple of them this morning.  First, I'm sad for the end of another college football season.  I'm proud of my Gamecocks for finishing 4th in a couple of the polls!!!  Awesome!  It was a fun season and there were many, many great games to watch!

I DO NOT like cold weather.  At all.  No way.  Add in some wind and it's a "cruel world out there."   I am lucky to live south enough that when we get a cold snap it doesn't last long.  But I'm thinking of ALL of you in other parts of the country cold and snowed in - and it's just the beginning of winter.   Stay warm - stay safe.   Try not to get "hysterics in the barracks" as my Dad would say.   And....come on SPRINGTIME!!!
